One of Michaelâs closest friends, Yesenia Aguirre, was a schoolteacher for seventeen years, and in her spare time, she now drives for Uber. But Yesenia is not simply an Uber driver. She is a beautiful example of someone who uses all five ways to build a relationship with someone. She makes it her job to uplift her passengers. âI have a captive audience,â she says. âTheyâre not going anywhere because they need me to take them to the next destination. What can I do to make them happy when they leave my car? What can I do to bring hope?â
First, she greets them warmly by using their name. She notices that so many of them are surprised already by hearing their name and the friendly way in which she says it. Then she compliments them. âPeople love to be complimented, and it opens up conversation really quickly.â
Sometimes her passengers will notice that her profile says she was a teacher, and theyâll ask her why she drives overnight. She takes the opportunity to share her storyâshe quit teaching because of her momâs health problems; she wanted to take care of her full-time. âThat further breaks the ice because they see that a person is willing to sacrifice their life and their future and their dreams to help with their parents. And that kind of gets people to talk more personally about their life,â she says.
Once, she picked up a hedge fund executive who shared with her that he was miserableâhis work was top-notch, but his relationships were almost nonexistent. He felt he had little to look forward to in life. Yesenia listened quietly as he shared that he thought about jumping off of a building and ending his life.
Yesenia believes that if we are alive, then we have purpose. She told the executive so and then suggested that the next morning, he should look up St. Jude Childrenâs cancer ward, or go to the Boys & Girls Club to help out. âYou need to get out of your head,â she told him. He listened to every word she said, then responded, âThank you! I feel like I just went to therapy. I feel so much better.â
Yesenia recently picked up a man who was going to serve ten years in federal prison a week from when they met. She asked him what happened, and he told her that four days prior, he had been convicted for selling drugs. It was the biggest bust on Long Island to date, the man told her.
He told her how he became involved with the drug trade after an accident where he fell off scaffolding and hurt his back. A friend of his gave him Vicodin. The man soon became addicted to it and then, in the quest for more of it, decided to sell it. One thing led to another, and it became his life. He told Yesenia, âI tried to do right, but the mortgage had to be paid, the car had to be paid.
